I shall provide!!!!!

We had a very successful hunt yesterday. The temperature has warmed up quite a bit. Tuesday morning we started our morning walk with a temperature of -37. So, yesterday at -20 it seemed quite balmy out. For our last day we were given permission to hunt a ranch that we have always wanted to check out. Having left Kirby at home we all knew it was going to be a very good day. I had a doe draw that we were trying to fill as well as looking for the elusive 4 points. I took this doe at 9:30 in the morning. We had to head back to town to do some errands in midday and decided to go back out in the afternoon to a little spot we know.

With only about 1.5 hours of daylight left we all split up to walk. There were deer everywhere. At one point I saw 10 deer all around me. Buck were chasing does in full rut. I spotted a big buck running down the hill and went after him. I found him again a few minutes later nose down behind a doe. I got positioned for a 250 yard shot across the valley and took a shot. Missed the first time, hit the second, hit the third and missed the 4th and 5th. This buck did not want to go down and now I am out of bullets. So, this buck walked wounded to within 10 feet of me and collapsed. I waited a while as he looked around and finally his head dropped and it was over...........so I thought. He jumped up a few minutes later and the tracking was on. He was bleeding pretty good so he was easy to follow in the snow. We didn't have much daylight left so I had to keep following this deer. Luckinly I met up with Bremner and Todd and Todd actually shot him again as he was running up a bank. Still, we followed. He eventually stopped bleeding but we ran out of light and had to abandon the search. After an hour long walk in the dark back to the truck, we decided to go back at look for this buck again with flashlights. After another 20 mins of tracking we found him, still alive bedded down beneath some trees. Next thing you know he was in the back of the truck. We are all glad we found him in the end.

I have mentioned it before, but sometimes, even though it's hard work, it's nice to have a little "reminder" of what "hunting" really is. None of this truck hunting where you spot something, shoot it and are back in town within 2 hours.

I just can't believe you didn't wrestle the buck with your bare hands once you were out of bullets!! That would have been quite a story.

PS - Good job GWH!!

You should feel lucky that we didn't make you own up to your end of the deal......with 3 missed shots, we should have dragged you down the road with your bare ass to the snow for 50 feet. Oh, buy the way I heard you were in tears the morning I had to stay at home.
