Another trip to the Untied Skates of Amurica
Here we are..........the DeHavilland Dash 8-100. Apparently, all of the interiors are being re-fitted with leather seats and new carpets. Personally, I think they are trying to make a 25 year old aircraft look new again. I guess it is worth a try.
This is a shot of the Detroit Metro Airport from about 8000 feet. I was actually a bit nervous going in here for the first time because it has 6 runways and is quite busy.
During the flight from Toronto to Detroit, I took some time to get acquainted with the airport through the diagram I have in my "special pilot book." You think it's confusing from the view from the airplane? I thought so too. Until I looked at my map....
Runways are black, taxiways and parking areas are grey and terminals are in the middle. Piece of cake!? How about this........As some of you may know, airport taxiways are given a letter of the alphabet. At an airport like this, when you get off the runway and call the ground controller he will say something along the lines of, "Dash 8 on Kilo......Taxi Foxtrot, Golf, Sierra, Mike, cross runways 32 and 15, taxi Whiskey to Apron 2 and call ramp control on 121.65." That, my friends, is why we have maps. However, we were in and out of there without any problems whatsoever and so far, I haven't been back.
I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Pittsburgh last summer. I had been twice before, but never in good weather. I got a beautiful view of the Appalachian Mountain ranges. Of course, the mountains were nothing compared to those out in BC, but these were different and neat to see.
The mountain ranges ran as far as the eye could see, each one being only a few thousand feet high and between each range were fertile farmlands scattered with little towns and villages. The mountains and valleys looked like ripples on the Earth.
Very cool.
What would a trip to the US be without seeing something nuclear? I know Canada has nuclear power plants but I saw many more on my way to Pittsburgh than I have ever seen in Canada.
Pittsburgh airport off in the distance below...
Final Approach into Pittsburgh. What a beautiful summer day in Pennsylvania.
The next picture is of Baltimore, Maryland. This is a busy airport but I have only ever used a very small part of it. My company almost always lands on the same runway, taxis to a gate close by and then taxis out to take off on the same runway we just landed on. Sometimes, I wish all airports were this easy.
This photo was taken last Spring on my way home from a trip to Baltimore. Almost all of the ice is melted on Lake Erie in the background and the wind has blown it all to the eastern shore where Buffalo can be seen. The river that trails off to the right is............
The Niagara river........leading toooo?
...Beautiful Niagara falls. I have now seen these falls from above and while standing right beside them. I must say they are far more magnificent from ground level. I have also seen the falls at night, while flying above them and the green lights that shine on the falls makes the mist glow green.
I have such a great view from my office window. Can you say the same?
